Winter Park is on the eastern edge of Grand County, Colorado. If you are visiting the Winter Park area this summer, be sure to take a day trip (or longer) to some other beautiful towns in the county. My personal favorite town to visit is Grand Lake. Below I will tell you why.
They say Grand Lake is the soul of the Rockies. It is a town adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park and Arapaho National Forest where it features miles of lakes and rivers, abundant wildlife, quaint shops, delicious dining, great nightlife and a multitude of activities and events. It is a wonderful vacation spot to visit year round, but summer is truly my favorite.
I love to walk around the quaint mountain downtown where the vibrant shops and restaurants open their doors delightfully inviting you in. Local owners have a variety of unique items to browse from. My kids love playing at the downtown park where there are covered picnic pavilions, restrooms, library and an inviting clean setting for the family.
Another favorite activity to do with my kids in Grand Lake is to head down to the Grand Lake beach and marina, just off of the downtown section. We love playing in the sand, swimming in the refreshing water and getting on a watercraft. The marina rents boats of all kinds. Paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, speed and pontoon boats. Getting out on the lake is probably one of the greatest qualities of Grand Lake. The mountain views of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Continental Divide will have you in the most picturesque Colorado setting. The fishing is also good!
There are abundant hikes and sightseeing destinations all around Grand Lake. Just a few miles from town is the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Explore by car the views, sites, wildlife and awe-dropping scenery that Colorado has to offer. Take a walk or hike along the way. Bring your fishing rod and throw a cast on the river or stream to catch that beautiful rainbow trout.
The nature and environmental activities are endless at Rocky Mountain National Park and Grand Lake. The town also hosts some of the best restaurants, shops and activities for people of all ages. I highly encourage a visit to this beautiful mountain town where your soul will feel the soul of the Rockies.
